Some of the things people look at in dogs are aggressiveness, size, and intelligence. The American Kennel Club reports that man’s best friend may be smarter than you think: “Dogs are known to learn hundreds of[s] words, do some arithmetic, and guess what people and other dogs are thinking. Police dogs can also detect drugs and explosives.

Canine experts say that, from an intelligence standpoint, not all dogs are created equal. To choose which breed of dog is considered the smartest, 24/7 Tempo consulted a list of the smartest dogs published by the American Kennel Club. It’s a remarkably diverse assortment. There are breeds from Africa and Australia, Alaska and the Alps. There are breeds that can hunt bears and there are breeds that can pretty much fit in your pocket.

Dogs also span the centuries, from the Rottweiler, with a history stretching back to the Roman Empire, to the Chinook, which was bred at the turn of the 20th century. There is also the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka, which you may never have heard of and which almost disappeared. And, of course, there’s the Labrador retriever, which not only serves as a pet, but also a guide dog and search and rescue. It’s America’s most popular breed, which suggests we may be pretty smart too.

The smartest breed of dog is the Shetland Sheepdog. The breed was originally bred to care for the small sheep of the Shetland Islands. Due to their intelligence, Shetland Sheepdogs quickly understand and obey orders. Although the breed is loyal and affectionate, which makes them an excellent pet, they also tend to be reserved towards strangers, which makes them an excellent watchdog.
