Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy is a very busy guy, and he recently appeared as a cover model in an Autotrader calendar posted via Dogtrader for National Dog Day.
In addition to featuring Kenworthy and his Korean rescue puppy Jindo Birdie, the calendar also features adoptable rescue puppies that can be found on Dogtrader and social media superstars like Dogstagram’s Rambo the Puppy, WillieCute and the Goldenwoofs.
(Autotrader also released its 2021 list of the best cars for dog lovers for National Dog Day.)
Viewers will remember Gus Kenworthy as a freestyle skier who competed in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in slopestyle in Sochi.
But the Anglo-American skier has also won five X Games medals, seven Winter Dew Tour medals and several world championships, in addition to an aspiring acting career, appearing on American Horror Story: 1984, Will and Grace and various reality shows, and as a TV personality in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games.
In addition to being an animal welfare advocate who participated in the Puppy Bowl 2018, he is also very active as an advocate for LGBT rights.
He chatted with Wesley and O’Day dog via a video meeting last week to talk about Birdie, how he got started with dog rescue, and more.
Gus Kenworthy chats with Dog O’Day about his dog Birdie and more.
Dog O’Day – Can you tell me a little bit about your dog Birdie, and how you came to adopt him?
Gus Kenworthy – Yes my dog ââBirdie is a Korean Jindo mix, I actually adopted him from a dog meat farm in South Korea. I was in Pyeongchang at the time to compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics, and I work a lot with the Humane Society International; they were shutting down a lot of dog meat farms, so I went with them to the farm, so I could see how an atrocity it was, in person, so I could better defend them.
While we were there, there was a dog giving birth in one of the cages; one of those puppies born on this day is my dog ââBirdie. We are therefore very connected.
It’s awesome. And what is his personality, as in everyday life?
She honestly is just the sweetest dog. Her personality is just that she is VERY happy to be lucky; she is quite independent, at home she loves to cuddle but she is kind of like a cat sometimes in the way she leaves the room and goes into her own bedroom and curls up into a ball and is sort of alone. What I like is an independent woman and she needs her time. But otherwise⦠she’s so sweet, she kisses, she’s just a really good girl.
