The life expectancy of dogs has been revealed in a new study – and the difference between breeds is staggering. The Royal Veterinary College analyzed around 30,500 dogs that died between January 2016 and July 2020 to identify the breeds with the highest and lowest life expectancies.

The overall expectation is 11.2 years. Jack Russell terriers have the longest life expectancy at 12.7 years.

French bulldogs are on average only 4.5 years old. English Bulldogs at 7.4, Pugs at 7.7 and American Bulldogs at 7.8 were also among the lowest.

Covid. He added, “These new VetCompass Life tables now allow owners to estimate how much longer they can benefit from these dogs.

“The short life expectancy of flat-faced breeds such as French Bulldogs shown by the VetCompass Life tables supports the UK Brachycephaly Task Force’s call for all owners to ‘stop and think before buying a flat-faced dog “.”
