Who is a good boy? What it takes to compete

All dogs go to Heaven, but not all dogs can participate in dog shows.

From Chihuahuas to Great Danes, hundreds of dogs took part in the Bonanza Kennel Club dog show in Carson City this weekend to show off their chops. Dogs trotted across a grassy stage, followed various commands, and posed seductively for a reporter’s camera during the event.

Training a show dog is different from training a domestic animal.

“Most of the time, they have to learn to stand still for a judge to examine them. They have to learn to walk naturally so that the judge can see their movement and see their structure, ”said Jeanetta Gulden.

Gulden has been training and managing golden retrievers since 1989. She added that her last name had nothing to do with her career working with the breed.

“It’s quite specific. (Dogs) need to train with a specific breeder or trainer, ”Gulden said.

Mercedes Messer, who has been training large breed working dogs for at least 17 years, shares this sentiment.

“Find a trainer who understands your breed because (working dogs) are misunderstood by a lot of people. And then you work with that coach, ”Messer said.

Hundreds of dogs took part in the Bonanza Kennel Club dog show in Carson City this weekend.

However, that’s not all the job for these four-legged competitors.

“I just want to see if he has what it takes,” said Brenda Giese. She owns an 8 month old purebred Samoyed named Koda and has added that he will be her ski companion.
